New council for LAS & more

21 April 2007 · No Comments

The Library Association of Singapore held it Annual General Meeting on 17 March 2007. Check out the report on our AGM and the new council for 2007-2009.

LAS announced its Overseas Library Conference Sponsorship for 2007. So if you are hankering for such an opportunity, do send in your applications soon as the deadline is 4 May 2007. LAS members can get a discount for the ILDS Conference coming up in October.

LAS members participated in the NTU Entrepreneur Seminar and LAS jointly hosted a talk on Australian university libraries.

The Singapore Polytechnic Library hosted workshops for its students on its premises.

The National Library has been very active; it set up a Web Archive Singapore, signed MOUs to preserve Singapore films and to provide financial information, and held a tea party for art librarians.

The Singapore Journal of Library & Information Management volume 34 (2005) was sent out to LAS members earlier. Our apologies for the error in the page footers inside the issue, which showed Volume 34 * 2006 when it should be Volume 34 * 2005. The correct volume and year was shown on the cover and title page. So dear cataloguers, please use the title page. I hope the error did not cause too much confusion.

Looking forward to a new year

28 December 2006 · 2 Comments

The year of 2006 is drawing to a close and it has been a great year for LAS. We had celebrated our 50th anniversary with a string of events that culminated with the gala dinner.

In this second issue of the Singapore Libraries Bulletin Blog, a picture of NUS Central Library graces the banner and I aim to change the banner with each issue to highlight the different libraries in Singapore.

There were some lovely comments for our readers! They liked the interactivity and the online nature of the blog. We hope to bring you more interesting news and articles in the future. I noticed we get comments from readers who are not librarians!

LAS is looking forward to an engaging conference in January 2007. The Special Libraries Section has created a new logo for itself, organised a financial talk and one of its members has written an interesting opinion on the relationship between academic librarians and special librarians. The Statement of Ethical Principles has also been finalised and we invite your comments on it. A forum on professional development scheme was also held. Read about the interesting talk about Library on Steroids by Leslie Burger.

The book titled Celebrating Libraries was launched and it is the very first book that has our users saying such wonderful things about us - a must read for librarians!

Unfortunately we also saw the passing of Ms Lim Kek Hwa.

Check out the new Republic Polytechnic Library and the philosophy behind its design, the newspaper reading corners in our polytechnic libraries and a new Media Viewing Zone at Singapore Polytechnic Library. The September Project 2006 was hosted by the National Library Board to engage teens in global issues. The arts community was also engaged by an exhibition of woodcut prints.

IFLA’s Interlending and Document Supply Conference is also coming in 2007 and held right here in Singapore.

It is looking like an exciting year ahead for librarians and libraries in Singapore. All the very best wishes for a wonderful year in 2007!

Welcome to the first weblog issue for the Singapore Libraries Bulletin published by the Library Association of Singapore (LAS)! Starting with this September 2006 issue, we are going totally virtual without printing hard copies to distribute to LAS members. We are making use of the weblog platform with the aim of being more interactive, as members can add their comments to the articles posted as soon as they read it. We hope LAS members will enjoy the Bulletin in this form. We invite your comments and your feedback!

Mark your calendar (29-31 Jan 2007) as LAS is bringing you an opportunity to update yourself with the topics to be discussed at the LAS Conference!

Loads of activities happened in Singapore and we also had our librarians travelling to Kota Tinggi, Manila and even British Columbia in Canada. Unfortunately, two of our librarians have passed on and we pay our respects to them.

Hope you enjoy the articles! We look foward to your contributions for the next issue in December!
